Porterbrook Leasing Company Limited ("Porterbrook"), a subsidiary of Abbey National plc ("Abbey"), today welcomed the news that the Department for Transport (DfT) has selected Porterbrook to finance 48 additional Electrostars for the Train Operator, Southern.
The announcement was made today by the DfT and Porterbrook will now work with Bombardier Transportation to finalise a contract for the new vehicles. Paul Francis, Managing Director of Porterbrook said "Porterbrook has been working closely with Southern and Bombardier since 2002 to successfully introduce 700 new Electrostar vehicles to the network. I am pleased to confirm that we are now in the advanced stages of negotiation to place a follow on order for an additional 48 vehicles. This demonstrates Porterbrook’s ongoing commitment to invest in the UK rail industry to enhance the networks capacity for the travelling public. The Electrostar is a proven product and its introduction to the Southern franchise will allow Porterbrook’s Class 319 units to be cascaded to First Capital Connect to alleviate overcrowding problems on that franchise."

Colin S Walton, Chairman of Bombardier Transportation in the UK, said: "I am delighted with the news that these new cars will soon be ordered. This will enable us to switch our Electrostar production line back on, which is good news for our Derby site and for our suppliers. We see a very strong future for the Electrostar product both here in the UK and overseas. The additional Electrostars for Southern will form part of the solution to overcrowding on trains in the South of England"
