| Southern signs up for new trains | ||
04.05.2007 The deal follows the recent announcement by the Department for Transport on its proposed plans following consultation on the Brighton Main Line Route Utilisation Study. As part of the plan, Southern will release its fleet of 48 class 319 carriages and make these available for services on the Thameslink route. This will help to deal with the crowding issues currently faced on the line. Commenting on the deal, Southern managing director, Chris Burchell said: “We are delighted to have closed this deal so quickly and efficiently. This has secured a tangible move towards helping with the continued growth in passengers across the South East. These new trains will make a real contribution in meeting the future needs of the railways, as it becomes an ever more popular mode of transport.” |
Paul Francis from Porterbrook said: “This £58 million investment in new rolling stock for Southern passengers demonstrates Porterbrook’s continued confidence in its business and its commitment to support the growth of the rail industry at a time when rolling stock leasing is being viewed negatively by some parties. This continues the ROSCO success story since privatisation which has delivered £4.2 billion in passenger rolling stock since 1996 and introduced 4,500 vehicles into service”. The signing of this contract is an initial step of the industry’s challenge to deliver 1,000 new carriages over the next seven years, as recently announced by the Secretary of State for Transport.
