The FLA is a vehicle which is designed to allow the carriage of a 9’6” high container within UK railway loading gauge W6/W6A. Carriage of these tall containers is not normally possible on “standard” UK flat wagons as the container will foul the loading gauge but these wagons avoid this by using small wheels and raised headstocks to meet standard buffer height. The load limit for the containers is less than usual maximum loading for maritime containers, but 9’6” containers are generally loaded for bulk, not mass; if a customer wants to move a heavy consignment, he will use an 8’0” or 8’6” box and thereby pay less for the transit. The maximum lorry weight from terminals is 44 tons; therefore, the 38 ton container weight is not a problem. These wagons have another fringe benefit in that they are particularly quiet in operation.
