This small number of a very large class of locomotives represent the Freightliner fleet, sold to and leased back from Porterbrook shortly after privatisation. Fitted with an English Electric 6KT engine of 298 Kw (400hp) these locomotives have a reputation for reliability. They are of very rugged construction and will be around for many years yet, despite being introduced in 1955. The basic 0-6-0 design goes back to LMS days, with construction continuing until 1962, and even now no obvious successor exists, testifying to the success of the design. The locomotives can also be used for short “trip” workings and can be geared for 20 mph operation.
