Known as “Sprinters” when first introduced in 1986, these units are designed for suburban passenger services, featuring sliding doors and high density seating. The successful Cummins-Voith-Gmeinder drive train is employed, along with BP38 and BT38 air-suspension bogies and a Mk3 derived bodyshell producing a dependable unit. The units operate in multiple with all the ex-regional railways DMUs, along with the more recent “Turbostar” designs in formations up to 12 cabs. An end gangway provides full train access when working in longer formations. Various operators have made changes to the interior so seat numbers differ across the fleet, although all have one toilet per two - car unit, a PA system, and hopper windows. The engineering design of these trains is fairly simple, making them easy to maintain; improvements being made from the original 150/1 design.
