The 170/2 variant of the 400 strong Turbostar fleet was actually delivered in two batches, the first 8 units as three cars in 1999 and the last 4 units as two cars in 2002. Consequently there are detail differences between the two sub fleets. The three car units have less seats than may be expected as they have a large and luxurious first class area, a buffet and a train manager’s office. As with all Class 170 units, full multiple control is available with Class 15X units, and with modification Class 16X and 14X. These units are also fitted with electronic seat reservation, although this is not in use. The bodyshells are painted white, with the livery above applied using vinyl decals, which can be easily changed. This fleet is maintained by Bombardier for Porterbrook and achieves consistently good reliability figures.
