Delivered in 1998 and 1999 the Scotrail class 170/4 fleet features 9 first class seats in both ends of the first 15 units, but in only one end of the last 10 units. The units operate medium distance fast services in Scotland, including the frequent Edinburgh – Glasgow service. Interiors use Chapman seats, trimmed in purple against grey wall panels. Turbostar standard features of air suspension, PIS system, twin-system air conditioning and powered interior doors are all installed. Most vehicles are mainly white with decal-applied livery, but with a painted purple roof. Some later units have variations of the first group livery applied, while the example above is in Strathclyde PTE colours
