This 2 – car Turbostar fleet was built for Central trains services such as Birmingham – Norwich which operate over long distances, but fulfil various suburban needs along the way. They are all standard class using Lazzarini seats with a wider spacing than on 170/1. This sub – class also features a “cross – feeding” system which enables one car to supply some auxiliary power to another in the event of one engine failing. The same high level of facilities is provided as with other Turbostar fleets giving a good ride, air conditioning and 1300mm wide doors for minimum station dwell times. The Central trains interior is refreshingly bright, using Purple and green trim with white body panels.
