Undoubtedly the most striking units in the fleet must be the Gatwick Express units, designed by Jones Garrard for Alstom, and introduced in 2000. The trains are equipped with 5 Onix IGBT drive packages, geared to optimise timing for this operation. The trains are approved for 100mph running, although this speed is rarely reached on this short route. Mechanically fixed ribbon glazing completes the external “express” look, while inside first and standard class accommodation is provided, along with plenty of luggage space. Beneath the front “bonnet” is a Dellner coupler which can be deployed to locomotive haul the train. A passenger information system is provided, along with facilities for the disabled, but these are not fully RVAR compliant. The units are fully air conditioned and among the most reliable trains in the country, regularly achieving more than 30,000 miles per casualty.
