Very few of this Electric train heating fitted variant remain in service, and those that do are mainly confined to operating works moves and other departmental activities.  Originally built from 1963 to 1967 by Brush and Crewe locomotive works the Class were designed for “mixed traffic”.  As steam train heating disappeared the sub - class 47/4 was produced replacing the boiler with an ETH alternator, thus becoming more specialised passenger locomotives.  Conversely some of the remaining locomotives were optimised for freight by re-gearing, these being Class 47/0.  The locomotives are still capable of hauling express passenger trains, but have been replaced in regular service by “Voyager” DMUs, although their updated version, the Class 57, is used for passenger trains.
