The first Porterbrook/Brush conversion is shown next to a new example supplied to FGW. 57601 was converted in 2001 and ran very successfully, later being sold to a special train operator. 57602 – 57605, were built in 2004 and are now leased to FGW for the demanding sleeper services. The 57/3 uses a 645-F3B 12 Cylinder engine, allowing a 95mph top speed and an ETH index of 100. Other work carried out at the refurbishing was re-wiring, new main and auxiliary alternators, new cooler group, new silencer, fault diagnosis system fitted, cab environment improved, bogies overhauled and, of course, a new livery. The Class 57/6 does not have the retractable Dellner coupler of the 57/3, giving it a more pleasing appearance. The class 57 gives the advantages of a new locomotive, but without the risks and expense.
