The Class 82 Driving Van Trailer (DVT) has previously been used on Inter-City push-pull type passenger trains and is currently used as part of the Virgin Trains West Coast push-pull services. The 52 vehicles were built in 1988..
The DVT is provided with a full width cab at the leading end, a train manager's office, vestibule end gangway at the trailing end and a luggage van / cycle storage / trolley storage area in the centre section of the vehicle.
The DVT when leading has full control of the trailing locomotive by means of a Time Division Multiplex (TDM) control system.
The leading end of the DVT is fitted with an obstacle deflector, buffers, drophead buckeye coupler and jumpers and had a design speed of 125mph, although the current service speed is 110mph.
The bogies fitted to the DVT are the T4 series bogies (BT46), designated T4/2A and T4/2B. The leading bogie, T4/2A, has footsteps, lifeguards and AWS receiver fitted to it. These items are not fitted to the T4/2B bogies. However all BT46 bogies can be built into either type.
Primary suspension of the bogies is by means of coil springs fitted between each axlebox and bogie sideframe.
Levelling valves, one on the leading bogie and two on the trailing bogie control the volume of air in the secondary suspension airbags thereby maintaining a constant height in the secondary suspension and thus the longitudinal and lateral level of the vehicle body relative to the bogie frame.
An anti-roll bar is fitted to each bogie to restrict the vehicle body roll.
The DVT is fitted with a disc brake/pad arrangement and is also fitted with a hydraulic parking brake system. The braking system on the DVT provides controls and equipment to apply and release the brakes of the vehicles that make up the train. In the push-pull formation this includes the DVT, the remotely controlled locomotive and the MkIII coaches.
The DVT is provided with a motor-alternator (MA) set to supply the electric and electronic equipment on the vehicle. The motor receives its power from the Electric Train Supply via body end jumper equipment. The alternator supplies a 3 phase ac system and is nominally rated at 27.5KVA, 415V, 50Hz. The alternator is used to power the battery charging unit and air conditioning systems, van heating and boiler ring.
Communication equipment on the DVT comprises a NRN radio, a driver / train manager intercom and passenger address system.
