Commercial Strategy Manager


Porterbrook Leasing Company specialises in the leasing and asset management of passenger and freight railway rolling stock and associated equipment. Based in Derby with a corporate Head Office in London, the organisation is undertaking a period of transformational change as it responds to the changing landscape in rail and is taking an active lead in the industry interms of innovation. The ability to respond to the changing needs of the rail industry is critical to the long-term success at Porterbrook and the Commercial Strategy Manager is a key role in being able to achieve this.

Working under the direction ofthe Re-leasing Manager, this role will be accountable for scanning the external environment to identify business opportunities for Porterbrook. The successful candidate will need to analyse the benefits for the train and freight operators of different strategies and any potential barriers to their implementation. This will include assessing the impact on performance, customer satisfaction, fleet and infrastructure utilisation, maintenance/depots and operating costs. Key responsibilities will be to provide the input and extensive research into commercial strategy and assist with the creation of compelling business cases. The role will ensure they become an embedded part of the rail industry by attending events, meeting with suppliers and operators and completing desktop searches to identify new trends both within rail and from other sectors – with an aim to identify growth areas for the business.

Our ideal candidate will be highly analytical, with a deeply probing mind and who has an established track record of identifying business opportunities which are commercially viable. They will have a deep understanding of the UK rail industry, and a good knowledge of engineering/fleet management. Ideally with some operational rail experience or a consultancy background, the individual will have a highly engaging personality and the ability to interact with senior stakeholders. Excellent written and oral communication skills are a must, along with the ability to write strong business cases. Refranchising and bid experience would be a distinct advantage. Overall the ability to think differently to add real strategic value to the business is the most critical skill.
