Commercial Strategy Manager


Porterbrook Leasing Companyspecialises in the leasing and asset management of passenger and freight railwayrolling stock and associated equipment. Based in Derby with a corporate Head Office in London, the organisationis undertaking a period of transformational change as it responds to thechanging landscape in rail and is taking an active lead in the industry interms of innovation. The ability to respond to the changing needs of the railindustry is critical to the long-term success at Porterbrook and the CommercialStrategy Manager is a key role in being able to achieve this.

Working under the direction ofthe Re-leasing Manager, this role will be accountable for scanning the externalenvironment to identify business opportunities for Porterbrook. The successful candidate will need to analysethe benefits for the train and freightoperators of different strategies and any potential barriers to theirimplementation. This will include assessing the impact on performance, customer satisfaction, fleetand infrastructure utilisation, maintenance/depots and operating costs. Key responsibilities will be to provide theinput and extensive research into commercial strategy and assist with the creation of compellingbusiness cases. The role will ensure theybecome an embedded part of the rail industry by attending events, meeting withsuppliers and operators and completing desk top search to identify new trendsboth within rail and from other sectors – with an aim to identify growth areasfor the business.

Our ideal candidate will be highanalytical, with a deeply probing mind and who has an established track recordof identifying business opportunities which are commercially viable. They will have a deep understanding of the UKrail industry, and a good knowledge of engineering/fleet management. Ideally with some operational rail experienceor a consultancy background, the individual will have a highly engagingpersonality and the ability to interact with senior stakeholders. Excellent written and oral communicationskills are a must, along with the ability to write strong business cases. Refranchising and bid experience would be adistinct advantage. Overall the ability to think differently to add realstrategic value to the business is the most critical skill.
