Brodie Engineering

In February 2024, Porterbrook underlined its commitment to supporting the vital rail supply chain by agreeing a deal to take a 49% stake in Brodie Engineering.

The Kilmarnock based company, which celebrated it’s 30th anniversary in 2026, is a highly regarded rolling stock engineering business offering a comprehensive range of refurbishment, maintenance, overhaul, engineering support, project management and repair services to the UK rail and light rail sector.

The strategic partnership with Porterbrook has enabled the company to enter a new phase of growth, doubling its workforce in just two years as new streams of work have opened up.

Alongside the two Kilmarnock depots, the business also provides a mobile service across the length and breadth of the UK and Ireland.

Founded on 26 February 1996 by Gerry and Debbie Hilferty as a specialist rolling stock engineering firm, demand for Brodie Engineering’s high-quality expertise has grown. Over the years, the business has expanded its operations and workforce, building a strong reputation for delivering complex engineering projects for major rail fleet owners and train operating companies.

In 2020, Brodie Engineering added to its existing Bonnyton Works site in Kilmarnock by acquiring and reopening the historic Caledonia Works site on the other side of the town’s rail track.

The future of rail is built stronger, together

We believe the strength and success of the railway is in the partnerships that power it
