Rail Minister launches UK’s first electrified testing loop 

The Rail Minister Lord Hendy of Richmond Hill officially opened Britain’s first electrified testing loop today, Thursday 4th June 2026, at the Long Marston Rail Innovation Centre in Warwickshire. 

Joined on stage by Porterbrook CEO Mary Grant and content creator Francis Bourgeois, Lord Hendy cut the ribbon to launch the brand-new 3.5km track in front of hundreds of representatives from across the railway, as well as apprentices from Network Rail and local primary school children who took part in an inspirational Rail Project at the site. 

Porterbrook, the UK’s leading rolling stock financier and asset management company, has invested over £75m to create a 135-acre world-leading facility. 

The Rail Minister, Peter, Lord Hendy, said: “The Rail Innovation Centre at Long Marston is a brilliant initiative which will support the next generation of trains in Britain. 

“It was an honour to launch the centre’s new testing loop today and as a passenger, I look forward to travelling on the trains that have benefitted from being tested at the site.   

“This kind of innovation is exactly what we want to see as we move towards Great British Railways so we can build a railway fit for the future which the public can rely on, and be proud of.”

Porterbrook has deployed over £1bn of capital during the last five years in new trains, fleet upgrades, traction innovation and rail infrastructure. Over £14m has been invested to build and test the country’s first hydrogen-powered passenger train, HydroFLEX, and the company also bought into the vital supply chain with a 49% stake in Brodie Engineering in Scotland. 

Recognising this significant evolution, refreshed branding was also unveiled at the event showcasing the belief that the future of rail is built stronger, together. The company highlighted its resolute commitment to continue working with partners across the industry to keep moving forwards and drive excellence for passengers.
